Chapel Review Weekending November 29th

Chapel Report
Friday November 29, 2013

Jim Epp shared in chapel on Monday Nov. 25.  His topic was ‘How Love Looks’ and he related three stories that demonstrate love in practical terms.  The most personal story was about his Grandma who, after fleeing Russia, remembered how her sister shared her food ration at a time of hunger.

On Wed. Nov. 27 the fall sports season was highlighted during an assembly in the chapel.  A comment was made for each player on the boys’ and girl’s soccer and volleyball teams as well as the players from the football, golf, and cross country teams.  As per tradition, donuts and hot chocolate followed!

On Thurs. Nov. 28 the RJC Faith and Life Committee hosted the YESS! Summit (The Youth Environmental Stewardship and Sustainability Summit).  In attendance were many workshop leaders and presenters as well as the student leadership teams from Constable Robin Cameron High School and the Rosthern High School.  Students explored environmental topics ranging from ‘simple living’ to ‘natural building techniques’ to name a couple of topics.  Student leaders finished the day by signing the YESS! Summit mural and indicating an action step going forward.

Advent continued in chapel on Fri. Nov. 29 when the peace candle was lit.

Chapel Review Weekending November 22nd

Chapel Report
Friday November 22, 2013

Continuing with staff chapels, Karalee Kuny shared in chapel on Wed. Nov. 13.  Students appreciated her use of multi-media and video clips to explore the theme ‘What is Love?’.   Karalee shared that at RJC she has been challenged to be not only a caring teacher, but also a loving one.

On Thurs. Nov. 14 the Faith and Life Student Committee organized a game of ‘Hangman’ on the whiteboard in the chapel, boys versus girls of course!  What made this version of ‘Hangman’ different was that Committee members kept erasing the body parts of the hangman.  This was meant to help students reflect on this month’s ‘love focus’, which is ‘Love keeps no record of wrongs’.
Cheyenne and Laura lead the game.

The Boys Team score a point!

On Fri. Nov. 15, Susan Huxman-Schultz, President of Conrad Grebel University College, spoke in chapel.  Huxman-Schultz was visiting campus as the guest speaker for our Annual Fundraising Banquet.

Mennonite Disaster Service rep. Janet Plenert joined us in chapel on Mon. Nov. 18.  She shared about the work and mission of MDS, and showed some slides of recent natural disasters in the United States.  RJC will be working with MDS at High River as part of our ALSO week this spring.

Kathy Moorman from the Saskatoon Health Region was in chapel on Tues. Nov. 19 to educate students as part of ‘Addictions Awareness Week’.  She used a Jeopardy-style game to raise awareness about addictions issues.   We appreciate Kathy’s willingness to educate our students about these important issues facing youth.

On Wed. Nov. 21 the Faith and Life Committee lit the first advent candle and started the advent season
Faith and Life committee members - Laura and Gabby

.  On Friday Nov. 22, Ryan Wood used chapel time to prepare students for RJC’s upcoming Youth Environmental Stewardship and Sustainability Summit (The YESS! Summit), which will happen on Thurs. Nov. 28.  RJC will host students from Rosthern High School, Beardy’s & Okemasis, and Oskyak High School during this event.

Sadie Hawkins 2013 - Medieval

The Girls Dorm Council along with the help of the female co-president and town student representatives hosted the annual Sadie Hawkins Event.  The theme of this years event was 'medieval'.  The girls creatively invited their 'dates' for an evening of fun and frolic in the weeks preceding. The girl's decorated the dining hall and prepared the gym for the evenings activities.  The kitchen staff prepared a mouth watering medieval feast, elegantly eating without utensils!  The meal was followed by team competitions in a variety of activities in the gym.  It was a great light hearted and fun evening.

Lauren and Laura hoping for a yes from Michael and Isaac!

The tables were set san utensils.

Answering trivia to earn the rights to proceed to the feeding table.

Finger Licking Good!

The deans join into the spirit

Trissy and Kelsey take on Josh and Katie in the jousting competition

Mikayla and Kat prepare for battle.

Dayna pins the horn on the unicorn.

Brittany and Robert 'sword fight' on the balance beam.

Ashley and Leah battle it out.

The team to accumulate the most points were given the pleasure of 'pie-ing' their choice of DC member in the face.  Haley takes one for the DC from Isaac.

The team to accumulate the least number of points got their whack at the dragon pinata. Kelsey gives it a go.

A lot of fun was had by all.  It was a great break in the middle of the week.  Thanks girls for a job well done.

Fundraising Banquet-November 16th

RJC was pleased to host over 190 guests at it's annual Fundraising and Appreciation banquet on Saturday, November 16.  The school's AGM or Corporation Meeting was held first at 5 pm followed by an evening of delicious food, great singing, an abundance of bidding on silent auction items and an inspiring keynote address by Susan Schulz Huxman, President of Conrad Grebel University College in Waterloo, Ontario.  All of the money raised at the event supports student learning at RJC.  Thanks to all who came and supported the mission of Christian education at Rosthern Junior College.

Geraldine Balzer, outgoing Chair of RJC's Board of Directors,  providing leadership at the RJC Corporation Meeting.

Viewing and bidding on items at the silent auction tables was a great way to support RJC and visit with old and new friends at the same time!

The RJC gymnasium proved again to be a comfortable setting for the 190 plus guests attending the banquet.

Board member Nicolle Tiessen played a key role in organizing the evening.  Here she is encouraging attendees to bid high and bid often on silent auction items.

Musical entertainment was provided by Sine Nomine, a men's quartet made up of RJC alumni from three decades.  They entertained the audience with both a classical and contemporary repetoire.

Guest speaker Susan Schulz Huxman, President of Conrad Grebel University College, challenged the audience to respond to God's radical call to "leave behind our nets" as the disciples did and follow whatever path God has for our lives.  She also made a compelling case for the importance of church schools, saying they are often the place where young people encounter this direction for their future as well.

The banquet was scrumptious!!!  Many thanks to the hardworking and talented staff in the RJC kitchen for feeding us all so well!

Chapel Review Weekending November 7th

Chapel Report
Friday November 8, 2013

Chapel this week included a visit from Kim Thiessen and Darryl Neustaedter Barg and members of MCC AB.  Kim and Daryl sang songs from their new CD “Even in the Smallest Places” and shared about their recent MCC trip to Guatemala and El Salvador where some of the songs on the CD were recorded.  This is Kim’s 5th CD in a series that have raised over $750,000 for MCC’s work in the area of HIV treatment and peace development!  It was a blessing to hear her stories and the message of hope.  This chapel time also introduced students to some of the issues facing Latin American people and helped prepare some students for their upcoming ALSO trip to Guatemala and El Salvador this spring.

Alumnus Megan Enns introduces Kim and Darryl.

Kim and Darryl
Canadian Mennonite University (CMU) representative Janelle Hume was another chapel guest.  She provided information about CMU and its programs and related the stressful experiences she had as a grade 12 student trying to figure out ‘what to do with her life’.  She encouraged students to not be to hard on themselves and assured students that they need to put their trust in God, and make that their primary focus.

Janelle

Students and staff observed Remembrance Day in chapel on Thursday November 7 by reflecting on the staggering death tolls in each of the two world wars, which resulted in the deaths of tens of millions of people.  In small groups, students were tasked with trying to ‘humanize’ the numbers.  One group determined that if RJC around 100 people then the death toll from WWII could be described as the destruction of 500,000 RJCs.  This helped bring the numbers home.  Students also compared the descriptive words from the ‘love passage’ in I Cor. 13:5-8 with the images and actions associated with war.  Students shared their reflections.  The hymn “If the War Goes On” was sung and followed by a moment of silence.  Students were reminded that to remember is to work for peace.

Chapel Review Weekending November 1st

Chapel Report
Friday November 1, 2013

Each year the teaching and dean staff members share in chapel.  Staff is invited to combine life experience with the Faith and Life theme with the year, which this year is “What is Love?” (I Cor. 13:4-7).  Staff chapels began on Oct. 21 with Ryan Wood sharing lessons he has learned through training for 10K runs.  Ryan shared his running playlist with the students and compared his experience of running with running the race of life.  Teacher Bev Epp shared on Mon. Oct. 28.  Bev used power point quotes and pictures of students to demonstrate how lovely students really are, and encouraged students to ‘choose love’ in their lives.

Rosthern Mennonite Church pastor Craig Neufeldt visited chapel on Wed. Oct. 23 and presented an overview of his recent pastoral exchange visit to China.  His presentation was titled “The Church on the Other Side of the World”.  Craig made the trip come alive for students with the use of stories, history and slides and challenged student to consider their own freedom of religion compared to life in China.  He also encouraged students to consider China as a travel destination and an area of further study and reflection.

Craig

Continuing with the monthly love-focus of ‘Kindness’ the Faith and Life Committee showed the youtube hit “Validation” in chapel on Thurs. Oct. 24.  This reminded students of the importance of validating and encouraging one another.  Building on this, on Oct. 30 the committee coordinated a ‘Hug Chapel’ where students names, times, and ‘hug-types’ were drawn at random and students (and even some staff!) were called to the front to hug!  We were reminded of the importance of expressing kindness to one another in a fun way, and students really embraced the idea!

Validation!

Hugs!

On Oct. 25, Robert Koop shared in chapel.  Robert Koop works with the Navigators Ministry at the University of Saskatchewan in Saskatoon, and resides in Rosthern.  Mr. Koop focused his talk on the importance of language referring to God highlighting that terms like ‘OMG!’ (‘Oh my God!) are prevalent in our society.  Mr. Koop encouraged students to be mindful when they call on the name of God.

Robert Koop

On Thursday Oct. 31 Ryan Wood spoke about the history and Christian roots of Halloween and All Saints’ Day.  Little Red Riding Hood and the Mad Trapper read scripture and prayers for all saints, living and dead, were spoken.  Principal Jim Epp also reminded students of the norms and expectations for Halloween in Rosthern and at RJC--treats, not tricks!  Students enjoyed the treats provided for them by staff the next day in class!

Shane and Alyssa

On Fri. Nov. 1 the girls’ DC used chapel time to introduce this year’s Sadie Hawkins theme—‘Medieval’.  Girls will need to creatively ask-out their dates over the next two weeks in anticipate of this event.
