Chapel Review Weekending December 13th

Chapel Report
Friday December 13, 2013

Teachers Lloyd Schmidt and Richard Janzen, along with Intern Sarah Paquette, shared in chapel this week.  On Monday Dec. 9 Lloyd used his math skills to lead students in a group game, which pitted four teams against each other.  The point of the game, which Lloyd explained at the end, was to get the students to see how they needed to work cooperatively in order for the game to have the best results for the greatest amount of people.  Math games + Lloyd + Chapel  = Fun!  Thanks Lloyd!

On Wed. Dec. 11 Richard showed slides of his family and talked about the importance of being part of a loving family unit.  He encouraged students to appreciate and cultivate loving relationships within their families, and to take time this advent season to remember that Christ was born within an earthly family.

Friday Dec. 13 was Intern Sarah Paquette’s final day at RJC.  She related some personal stories and explored the theme of ‘forgiveness’ in chapel.  When she was two years old her mother was killed in a car accident involving a drunk driver.  Her powerful personal testimony about learning to forgive the driver struck as chord with the student body and she received a loud applause at the end.  Following chapel students thanked Sarah for her contributions to the school year and wished her well.  All the best as you finish your studies at U of S next semester Sarah!

RJC continued to celebrate Advent this week with Faith and Life lighting the fourth advent candle on Thursday Dec. 12.  Christmas carols were sung and students were encouraged to spread Christmas joy.  The Faith and Life committee spread some joy themselves by surprising the student body with homemade cookies as they exited the chapel.  Merry Christmas everyone!  Next week students are anticipating Winter Fun Day and our final Christmas chapel, when we light the Christ Candle complete with a candle light service.  May the Christ child continue to inspire hope, joy, peace, and love in us all this advent season!   On behalf of the RJC Faith and Life Committee, Merry Christmas!

Chapel Review Weekending December 6th

Chapel Report
Friday December 6, 2013

Science teacher Adam Ens got personal in his chapel on Mon. Dec. 2 and helped students explore their ‘love language’.  Adam encouraged students to remember that each person receives and expresses love in different ways, and we need to be sensitive to one another’s love languages.

RJC students had an opportunity to get a jump on some Christmas shopping on Wed. Dec. 4 when a traveling 10,000 Villages Christmas sale visited our campus.
10,000 Villages is a fair-trade gift shore, which features many products made in the developing world.  Store manager Carol Reimer-Wiebe shared about the importance of fair-trade in chapel before students began their shopping.  Buy fair trade; it’s the gift that gives twice!   Students took her message to heart as over $1400 in sales were recorded!

Advent chapels continued on Friday Dec. 6 with the lighting of the third candle.  The Faith and Life Committee performed some skits to put the student body in the Christmas spirit.

Deeper Life Day - The YESS! Summitt

Rosthern Junior College Hosts Environmental Summit

On Thursday Nov. 28, Rosthern Junior College hosted the Youth Environmental Stewardship and Sustainability Summit (the YESS! Summit).  Students from RJC, along with student leaders from Constable Robin Cameron High School and Rosthern High School, participated in a day of workshops, activities, and summit meetings.  All the events were centered on the environmental themes of ‘stewardship’ and ‘sustainability’.  There were eleven workshops options, of which student choose three to attend.  The workshop themes included a tour of the Rosthern waterworks, a Valley Action/Sarcan tour, lessons in natural building, lessons in simple living, art & drumming workshops, and many others.  The workshops were lead by members of the community and various environmental groups like the Saskatchewan Council for International Cooperation, 10,000 Villages, and MCC.  As part of the Summit, students met in five different groups and wrestled with some environmental issues together.  Later, they presented their findings to the large group in the final session.  To end the day students signed their name to an action step identified on the summit mural.  Hopefully this activity inspired students to take seriously the need for better environmental stewardship in the future, and showed them how they can work together to meet the challenge.

Benjamin and Gabby along with Ryan Wood introduce the theme to the audience.

Students act out scripture about caring for our surroundings.

Students tour the Rosthern Water Works with town foreman Kelly Johnston.

Carol Reimer Wiebe explained the mission behind Ten Thousand Villages.
