RJC Update Oct 16-23

EVENTS THIS WEEK INCLUDE:

 

- Tuesday, Oct 16, 4:00 pm - Boys' soccer game, RJC versus Bruno, at Bruno Central School

- Wednesday, Oct 17 - Girls' soccer game at home versus Martensville

- Thursday, Oct 18, 4:00 pm - Football game, Rosthern versus PACI (Prince Albert Collegiate), in Rosthern.

- Friday & Saturday, October 12 & 13:

- Girls' Volleyball tournament in Lanigan.

- Boys' Volleyball tournament at Rossignol High School, in Ile-a-la-Crosse

  - Girls' Regional Soccer playoffs at RJC.  RJC will play Chief Poundmaker School at 3:00 pm on Friday.  The winner of that game plays Valley Christian Academy at 12:00 noon on Saturday.

- Boys' Regional Soccer playoffs at North Battleford.  RJC will play Maymont on Friday at 1:00 pm.  The winner of that game plays Cando on Saturday at 9:30 am.

PLEASE NOTE:  For all SHSAA playoff tournaments (volleyball, football & soccer) the SHSAA mandates that the hosting schools collect a gate admission.  Please, if you are planning to attend these events, be prepared to pay admission.  This money is collected, forwarded to the SHSAA and they, in turn, pay for the officials for these events.  Thank you for your cooperation.

- Tuesday, October 23, 5:30-7:30 pm - RJC KIELKE & SAUSAGE SUPPER Fundraiser at Bethany Manor (110 LaRonge Road, Saskatoon).  Featuring farmer sausage, homemade noodles & cream gravy, and salad.  Admission is by donation, and the RJC Chorale will be performing.  Everyone is welcome.   

UPCOMING EVENTS:

- PARENT / TEACHER / DEAN INTERVIEWS, Thursday, November 8, 1:00-6:00 pm in the RJC Rehearsal Hall.  Parents will have an opportunity to meet with RJC staff  Thursday afternoon from 1:00-6:00 pm (come-and-go basis).  Classes end at noon on Thursday, and the school and dorms will close for the November Remembrance Long Weekend (November 9-12).  No supper will be served on Thursday.  Classes resume Tuesday, November 13 at 8:30 am.

- RJC CORPORATION ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING - Saturday, November 17  in the school chapel (2nd floor), between 5:00 and 6:00 pm.  This meeting is an important time for acknowledging the past year, but just as importantly, planning for the current fiscal year.  Everyone welcome.

- RJC FUNDRAISING AND APPRECIATION BANQUET - Saturday, November 17, 6:00 pm in the school gymnasium.  Everyone is invited to join us for an evening of connecting with friends and supporting the mission of the school.  This year's guest speaker will be Kim Pityn, Chief Operations Officer of MEDA (Mennonite Economic Development Association) who will speak about "Sustainable Tools That Give Hope to the World".  The evening will feature live music performances from several individuals and groups in the RJC Alumni community. A Silent and Live Auction will also be held, and an offering will be taken during the event to fundraise for the programming of RJC.  To reserve your complimentary tickets call 306.232.4222 or email office@rjc.sk.ca by November 8th, so that the kitchen can prepare for the numbers expected.  Limited tickets available!

- RJC ON STAGE Fall Theatre - Sunday and Monday, November 18 & 19, 7:00 pm in the Pit Theatre.  The RJC Theatre Arts class is preparing a stage version of the classic Alfred Hitchcock movie mystery "The 39 Steps."  The Musical Theatre class will present excerpts from "Godspell" - a story based on the book of Matthew.  Tickets are on sale now for the Sunday or Monday evening performances.  Tickets are $10 each, and need to be reserved by calling RJC at 306 232-4222.

We've been busy! October 10

The days and weeks are starting to fly by here at RJC.  Students and staff are busy with activities in and out of the classroom. A few are highlighted below.

Students participated in the annual Terry Fox Run for Cancer Research.  The runners took off first followed by the walkers.

Phoenix and Morgan we presented the trophy in the Terry Fox Run.

Thanksgiving Chapel
Nicole leads the discussion with fellow students.  The discussion centered on helping students focus on the many things that we are thankful for in our lives.  

We then shared in a Thanksgiving feast prepared for us with loving hands by our very own cooks!

Developing community is very important to us at RJC.  Two important aspects of community are trust and open communication.  Here the Faith and Life committee focus on developing both these characteristics.    Students are blindfolded and asked to trust another student to safely lead them through an obstacle course using only verbal prompting.

The weeks to come look like they will be busy ones.  All of our teams continue to practice in preparations for regional competition, the Chorale is preparing for the Kiekle supper  and the dorm council is busy preparing for Sadie Hawkins.  Alumni Tournament and Deeper Life Days are fast approaching . . .and oh yes. . . we are attending classes as well and writing exams in between it all!

- Monday, Oct 15, 4:00 pm - Girls' soccer game at RJC versus Outlook High School.

- Tuesday, Oct 16 - Boys' soccer game at Bruno Central School.

RJC Update Oct 2-9

EVENTS THIS WEEK INCLUDE:

- Wednesday, Oct 3, 4:00 pm - Girls' soccer game at Outlook High School.

- Wednesday, Oct 3, 4:00 pm - Football game, Rosthern versus Birch Hills, in Birch Hills

-  October 5 (afternoon) to October 8 -  THANKSGIVING DESIGNATED WEEKEND - Classes will dismiss at noon on Friday, and resume Tuesday morning at 8:30 am.   The school residence will close at 2:30 pm on Friday (no supper served) and reopen again on Monday, October 8 at 3:00 pm.  All students need to make arrangements to travel home or stay with family or friends for this weekend.

- RJC ALUMNI TOURNAMENT WEEKEND - October 12 & 13 - Come join in the fun as a participant or a spectator!   Football (Spontaneous Fun on Saturday only), Soccer (Saturday only - meet in Rehearsal Hall at 10:00) and Volleyball.   A delicious lunch sponsored by Alumni is available between 11:00 and 1:00 in the Rehearsal Hall.  Email Denelda at deneldafast@hotmail.com to register for volleyball by October 7th or for information. Alumni and friends welcome.  

- RJC KIELKE  & SAUSAGE SUPPER FUNDRAISER - Tuesday, October 23, 5:30-7:30 pm at Bethany Manor (110 La Ronge Road, Saskatoon).  Admission is by donation, and the RJC Chorale will be performing.  Everyone is welcome.  If you are interested in helping with this event, please contact Valerie White or the RJC Office (val@rjc.sk.ca  or  office@rjc.sk.ca).  Kielke is a home-made noodle, pronounced "cheeeeeelcha."

For those of you who have attended this event in previous years, the location has been changed this year to Bethany Manor and will be Tuesday evening, October 23.  Please let any friends and family who might be planning to attend know of the change in location and date.

Grade 10 Spiritual Retreat - Risking New Beginnings

After Opening program on September 17th, the grade 10 class left for their Spiritual retreat at Camp Kadesh, Christopher Lake.  The theme for the retreat was 'Risking New Beginnings'.  Jim Epp and Dave Attema explored this theme over the three days using the story of Esther and the story of Moses from the bible.  Dave used his personal story to also  illustrate risking a new beginning. Nancy Epp lead the singing during the sessions.  On Monday morning we spent time team building on the Kadesh challenge course.  The student were then treated to an afternoon on the lake.  Ron and Edith Regehr  drove their boat endlessly around the lake until the kids could take no more!  The kids bonded as a class in the 59° F water!  It was a time of learning, getting to know one another, relaxing and enjoying the lake.

Grade 10 Class 

Grade 11 Spiritual Retreat - Learning to Lead

The theme for the grade 11 Spiritual Retreat was 'learning to lead'.  The retreat was held Sept 18th at Camp Kinasao at Christopher Lake.  The morning sessions were lead by Heather Peters from Hanley. The students explored different leaders in history and the different leadership styles practised by these leaders.  They looked at the concept of leading from the front, the side and from behind.  The afternoon began with a bridge building activity . Separate groups was tasked with building 1/2 a bridge. The challenge was to communicate verbally with another group so that at the end of the independent construction the bridges could then be connected.  The afternoon was filled with activities. Despite cool water conditions, the students enjoyed kayaking, canoeing and even a quick dip into the water.  The polar bear swim was rewarded with a trip to the outdoor sauna!  Those that were not interested in water activity enjoyed  games of football, frisbee or board games.  After enjoying a wiener roast and s'more feast, the students entertained one another by performing in a coffeehouse.

The Grade 11 class

Grade 12 Spiritual Retreat - Who will you be in the world?

The Grade 12 Spiritual class retreat was held at Waskesiu Lake on Sept 18th.  The morning session was lead by Patrick Preheim.  Patrick is the pastor of Nutana Park Mennonite Church in Saskatoon.  The theme of the retreat was "Who will you be in the world?"  Patrick lead the grade 12's through a series of spiritual practices that they could continue practicing throughout their lives. Larry Epp lead the students through an exercise focusing on what the student's value in their lives  and how they want to be remembered.  The afternoon activity was student lead by Eric, Landon, Tyler, Jaye, Matt R. and Meghan.  The students spent time going between quiet meditative activities and loud physical activities like backwards football  and ultimate frisbee.  Other activities included boardgames, disc golf, a trip to the driving range and time to 'chill' on the beach.  It was a great day 'off' from traditional school!
