Chapel Review Weekending January 24th

Chapel Report
Friday Jan. 24, 2014

Myrna Wiebe, RJC Residence Director, shared in chapel on Mon. Jan. 20.  She used a power point presentation to show some family pictures and explain how music, love, faith, and family are all connected for her.  She finished the chapel by inviting some staff members to sing (in four part harmony, of course!) a hymn with her, which sounded wonderful!

On Wed. Jan. 19 and Thurs. Jan. 20, ‘Conference Wednesdays’ continued as the chapel played host to Warman Mennonite Church pastor Josh Wallace.  Josh used his excellent story telling skills to relate a story about a young girl he knew in high school who had lost hope.  He encouraged the students to turn to one another, those they trust, and to God to gain hope in their lives.

Eigenheim Mennonite Church pastor Allan Friesen spoke in chapel.  He used a power point presentation to speak on the topic ‘All I Need to Know I Learned From Cows’.  Pastor Friesen shared about his time on the farm as a boy and in Paraguay as a young man, and now as a father on the farm outside of Laird.  He related lessons from the corral that reflect biblical truths that can be applied today!

On Fri. Jan. 24, the Faith and Life Committee launched it’s 8th annual ‘Faith and Life Fundraiser’.  This year’s theme is ‘Have a Heart’ and money will be raised for the Rosthern Elementary School Breakfast Program, The Paraguayan Recycled Orchestra (which will tour through RJC on Tues. May 6th), and for the Anadesa Peace Park Project in Guatemala.  The goal is to raise $5000.00 for these worthy projects.

Chapel Review Weekending January 17th

Chapel Report
Friday Jan. 17, 2014

ELA teacher Emily Dueck shared in chapel on Mon. Jan. 13.  She related stories of her youth, primarily from her families’ time in Paraguay, and about her recent work with MCC Ontario in the TOOLS inner-city program in Toronto.  The common thread of her message was to reach out to others, and make friends, wherever you are.

On Wed. Jan. 15 Kirsten Hamm, Area Church Youth Pastor for MC Sask., spoke in chapel.  She advertised upcoming SMYO events like the ‘Zombie Apocalypse’ youth retreat and invited all students to attend and be involved.  While in town she also promoted a SMYO fundraiser to pay for travel costs to the Mennonite World Conference in Pennsylvania in 2015.  She is selling fair-trade coffee, tea, and dried fruit.  The staff was happy to oblige and purchased many of her wares!

On Thurs. Jan. 16 the Faith and Life Committee discerned that the student body needed a break from pre-exam stress.  They organized a time of chilling out and eating nachos in the dining hall to give students a hopeful break from studies.

On Fri. Jan. 17 RJC welcomed 28 students on campus for Spend-A-Day, so the chapel was full!  Visitors and current students sang a hymn and learned about some of the Faith and Life programs at RJC.  The committee is launching its annual fundraiser with proceeds this year going to the Rosthern Elementary School breakfast program and a MCC project in Guatemala.

Using an ipad and the chapel projector the students ‘Face-Timed’ current MCC SALTer David Epp in Guatemala and viewed the project in real time.  David shared about his experience in Guatemala and how his time at RJC led to him being in Guatemala today.  It was exciting to see a former student and Faith and Life member encouraging current and prospective students to get involved, and serve others.

Staycation! January 10th

The Girl's Dorm hosted the first ever STAYCATION!  (Thanks to the Paradise and Meghan for masterminding this last year!)  To combat winter fatigue and relieve stress as finals loom in the near future, all the girls were invited to attend a girl's get away!  Where to,  you ask?  Our very own dorm and campus!

The Staycation began after school on Friday. A special after-school reception was held in the Chapel to kick off the event.  A snack of fruit and cheese and crackers was enjoyed by all.

We then loaded the vans for a trip out to Shekinah to enjoy Quill hill.  The weather was mild and great fun was had by all.
Rianna shows us how it is done!

Cheyenne and Danielle take it from the top.

I bet you Janelle wishes she had goggles like Lauren and Haley!

We returned for a delicious meal prepared by our very own kitchen staff.  The evening then continued with a dance party and a photo booth.
Janelle and Analicia teach the group some awesome dance moves.

Katie and Alejandra take advantage of the props for the photo booth.

This was followed by the viewing of the classic 'chick flick' Dirty Dancing.  The evening continued with slumber party on third floor girls dorm.  We played games and all ended up with silky smooth skin after oatmeal facials.

The morning brought breakfast in bed, then a relaxing session of yoga in the later am.  A brunch of crepes followed.  The Staycation ended Saturday afternoon with an envigorating belly dancing session.

Mackenzie and Alexa dig in.

Chapel Review Weekending January 10th

Chapel Report
Friday Jan. 10, 2014

Linda Dickinson, Material Resources Coordinator at MCC AB, was our guest in chapel on Mon. Jan. 6.  Linda encouraged students to ‘show up’ and take advantage of opportunities to serve others, especially during RJC’s upcoming ALSO week.  She spoke about her recent trip to Guatemala where she visited many of the communities that have benefited from the work of MCC, and where many RJC students have and will work and travel.  She also related some experiences from the floods of the past summer in Calgary and High River.  RJC students will visit High River during ALSO week to work with MDS in flood clean-up relief.   It was an encouraging hearing from someone so passionate and genuine about their work in service to others.

On Wed. Jan. 8 RJC held its first ‘Conference Wednesday’ chapel where pastors and leaders from the conference are invited to share in chapel.  Dave Feick, representing the Micah Mission, shared about his ministry to those in the justice system.  Dave challenged students to think beyond the headlines when considering criminal cases and to consider the people involved, both victims and perpetrators, and to consider how to bring restorative justice to all parties.

On Thurs. Jan. 9 the Faith and Life Committee attempted to stem the ‘January blues’ by performing a funny, heart-warming skit to introduce the ‘love theme’ for the month, ‘love always hopes’.  The committee shared events and activities that they are anticipating this semester to give students some things to which they can look forward.

On Fri. Jan. 10 Lutheran Minister Michael Diegal visited our chapel and delivered an epiphany themed message.  Pastor Diegal also presented some candlesticks, an advent wreath, and some books to RJC on behalf of the now closed Hague Lutheran Church.  These gifts are much appreciated, and reflect the solidarity of mission felt between different denominations in the Valley.
