Chapel Review week ending Friday Dec 7th

Chapel Report Fri. Dec. 7, 2012

Chapel this week featured a visit on Tues. Dec. 4 from MCC Saskatchewan’s Community & Young Adult Coordinator Myriam Ullah, along with two interns Rebecca and Erin.  They shared about their experience serving with MCC SK and related some information about MCC’s programming.  Chapel closed with a viewing of this year’s winning entries in MCC SK’s annual ‘Redefining Community’ film contest, which featured some RJC Alumni!

On Wednesday Dec. 5, staff and students celebrated the achievements from the fall sports season.  Coaches and players from the boys’ and girls’ soccer and volleyball teams and the football team shared season highlights.  Athletic director Joel Driedger thanked the students for their participation (80% of RJC students were involved in a fall sport this year!) and commended them on their sportsmanship.

Joel praises the students for participating in the fall sports program.

Ryan sharing highlights from each of the boys on his soccer team.

Team captains' Jaye and Nicole share about the girls volleyball experiences.

Advent chapels continued on Thursday Dec. 6 with the lighting of the peace candle, a puppet show, carol singing, and a message from Faith and Life student leader Joesf Beug.  This along with ‘The 12 days of Christmas’ dress-up days planned by the Spirit Committee are helping students get into the Christmas spirit, even though many are far from home.

Laura lighting the peace candle.

On Friday Dec. 7, RJC was honored to have Conrad Flett, host of the television show Tribal Trails, share in chapel.  Conrad’s soft, yet to the point, message conveyed his heart for God and his desire for others to experience the peace he himself has found.  He also played two songs.

"Bowl-a-thon" - Golfing for Guatemala!

The RJC Faith and Life Committee launched its seventh annual fundraiser on Friday November 23, announcing its ’Golfing for Guatemala’ campaign, featuring Global Family in Guatemala as a recipient.  The Boys, The Girls, and The Staff teams will compete over the series of nine ‘holes’ from Nov. 25 – Jan. 25.

Teams and individual members will use their creativity to develop fundraising initiatives to support this campaign that has raised over $27,000 in the past six years, mostly for MCC Guatemala.  This year’s funds will support Guatemala Global Family and other MCC Guatemala/El Salvador projects.    Charitable donation receipts will be issued for donations by cheque or credit card.   Some RJC students will observe the supported projects first hand during their ALSO week experience in Guatemala in spring.

As part of the RJC service fundraising campaign, Golfing....., Denise Epp (team staff) has initiated a a˜Bowl-a-thon". Students, staff and community members are not throwing bowling balls down an alley at five or ten pins, but rolling balls of clay into bowls.  Individually handcrafted pottery bowls suitable for chili, soup, noodles or rice are being made to raise money for MCC Guatemala and the local food bank.  This project was inspired by The Empty Bowl Project, where potters create bowls for a simple soup and bread meal. Those who purchase the bowl of soup keep the bowl and feed the hungry.  These RJC limited edition bowls will be sold at the Alumni Basketball Tournament at the beginning of January.

Cost of these individually hand crafted bowls? --- suggested sale price ---a donation of a minimum of $5.00, the cost of a Corel bowl, BUT we strongly encourage our alumni shoppers for a $10 donation, minimum wage for an hour of work. That is if all the creators don't buy their own bowls back. There may even be soup or chili for sale to fill those bowls.

Val And her mom crafting their bowls.

Several students are also creating bowls as part of a class project.  When sold, the student will decide which team to donate the money too and raise their score!

RJC Hosts Speaker for "National Addictions Awareness Week"

On Wednesday November 21, in recognition of National Addictions Awareness Week, Kathy Moorman from the Saskatoon Health Region shared information about addictions with RJC students. Addictions affect many aspects of society, and students benefited from increasing their knowledge of the topic.  Throughout the morning, each grade met individually for a session, which involved raising awareness through a “Family Feud” game show format.  Much learning and fun ensued.  During chapel the whole student body gathered for a Q&A session where students took the opportunity to ask many questions.  Thank you to Kathy Moorman for giving information about this important topic with our students.

RJC Launches 7th annual Faith and Life Fundraiser

On Monday November 5, Global Family visited RJC in chapel.  Global family is Mennonite Central Committee’s education support program.  More than simply providing children with access to school, Global Family supports communities in providing their children with quality educational programming.  RJC students learned how to support other students around the world who do not have access to quality educational opportunities.  Program Coordinator, Werner Wiens, along with Maria, a representative from Mexico City, testified to the value of the program, and encouraged RJC to consider supporting Global Family.

Maria

Program Director - Werner Wiens

Coincidently, the RJC Faith and Life Committee launched its seventh annual fundraiser on Friday November 23, announcing its’ Golfing for Guatemala’ campaign, which features Global Family in Guatemala as a recipient.  There are three teams competing for the “Fundraiser Cup”: 1) The Boys, 2) The Girls, and 3) The Staff.  Teams will compete over the series of nine ‘holes’ (pre-set dates), with the ‘course’ being open from Nov. 25 – Jan. 25.  At the completion of each hole the team with the lowest score (amount of money stuffed in their money box) will win the hole.  The object of the game is to have the lowest ‘score’ by raising money to stuff in opponents’ boxes, thus raising the other team’s score.    There will be prizes for winning each hole, and a grand prize (along with the Fundraising Cup) for the lowest total score.

Teams and individual team members will use their creativity to develop fundraising initiatives to support this campaign that has raised over $27,000 in the past six years, mostly for MCC Guatemala.  Profits from this year will be used to support Global Family in Guatemala as well as other projects supported by MCC Guatemala/El Salvador.  Stay tuned for opportunities to support this campaign!  Charitable donation receipts will be issued to people who donate money by cheque or credit card.   Some RJC students will observe the supported projects first hand when they travel to Guatemala for their ALSO week experience in the spring.

Annual Corporation Meeting and Fundraising Banquet

On Saturday, Nov 17, RJC held its annual Corporation general meeting in the school chapel. Board chair Geraldine Balzer-Peters thanked RJC constituency, board and staff for their contributions to RJC students’ Christian education. Principal Jim Epp summarized school activities in the past year, noting especially events and programming pointing students to Christian service. The AGM was followed by the annual fundraising and appreciation banquet in the school gymnasium.
Guest speaker Kim Pityn, Chief Operations Officer of MEDA (Mennonite Economic Development Association) spoke about “Sustainable Tools That Give Hope to the World” with examples from Afghanistan, Haiti and Tajikistan. A group of recent grads entertained with music. Silent and live auctions were also held, and an offering taken to fundraise for the programming of RJC.  Presentations were made by Geraldine Balzer-Peters to staff members who had reached 5, 10, 15 and 20 years of service.  A special presentation was made to Gail Schellenberg in recognition of her six years of service to RJC as Principal.

Special thanks to all who donated silent auction items. It was a huge success!

Checking their bids throughout the evening!

Special music by recent alumni - Heidi Dyck, Jill Olfert, Jennifer Regier, Clay Buhler, Luke Driedger Enns and Jordan Wiens.
