Chapel Review Weekending February 28th

Chapel Report
Friday February 28, 2014

Admissions Director Valerie White shared in the first chapel back from the February break on Mon. Feb. 24.  She addressed the chapel theme for the year ‘What is Love?’ using a series of slides that included pictures of her family and other relevant items from her life that shaped her understanding of ‘love’.  It was a highly personal chapel that the students and staff greatly appreciated.  Her final piece of advice was to embrace the fact that God loves us unconditionally.  Thanks Val!

On Wed. Feb. 26 RJC hosted twelve pastors and church leaders for the morning of ‘Pastor’s Day’.  Pastors from local and area churches were invited. As part of their morning activities, the pastors joined students in chapel and witnessed the first installment of the ALSO chapel series where the concept of ‘Red Letter Christianity’ was discussed.  ‘Red Letter Christianity’ embraces the idea that the words of Jesus (typed in red letters in some bibles) are to be taken seriously and acted upon in this world by his followers.  It is a trans-denominational movement that seeks to actualize the Kingdom of God on earth and build consensus between Christian groups.  This year’s ALSO theme is ‘To Participate is to be Fully Human’, a quote from author and theologian C.S. Lewis, and students are being challenged to fully participate in the calling to serve others in order to fully experience what it means to live a full life.

On Thurs. Feb. 27 the Faith and Life Committee had a Have a Heart Fundraiser update, which revealed that over $1200.00, has been raised so far!  The girls won the first leg of the competition by raising the bulk of the funds so far and were rewarded with a dress code free day and the chance to duct-tape teacher Karalee Kuny to the wall for a period!  Thanks to Karalee for being a good sport for a worthy cause!  The fundraiser will continue until Mar. 17 with all money raised going to the RES Breakfast Program, the Paraguayan Recycled Orchestra (visiting RJC on Tues. May 6), and the ANADESA community complex in Guatemala.  The next prize for students is an ice-cream sundae bar at lunch if they reach $2000.00.  Time to pick up the pace boys!

Grade 12 student Daniel Regier shared in chapel on Friday Feb. 28, which was followed by a pep rally for our Boys’ and Girls’ basketball teams as they enter conference playoffs; sports updates were given for the hockey and curling teams.  All the best to our teams!

Chapel Review for weekending February 14th

Chapel Report
Friday February 14, 2014

The SRC kicked off Semester Two with activities for Milk Week during chapel time during the first week of February.  Events included milk Jeopardy, mooosical chairs, and a milk relay, all of which were a big hit with students and udderly fun to watch!

The Faith and Life Committee has continued to promote their ‘Have a Heart’ fundraising campaign in chapel.  A recent update has the girls ahead of the boys in the friendly competition to raise the most funds.  Fundraising events have included selling cookie dough, delivering flowers and candy-grams for Valentine’s Day, and selling cupcakes at lunch.  Some students and staff are also knitting scarves and toques.  All money raised will be donated to the RES breakfast program, the Paraguayan Recycled Orchestra (visiting RJC in May), and the Anadesa community in Guatemala.

On Mon. Feb. 10th residence dean Timothy Block shared in chapel.  He surveyed a biblical understanding of the concept of love (complete with a slides!) and challenged the students to be wise in their relationship choices.  He shared some humorous and insightful examples from his own experiences.

On Wed. Feb. 12 music teacher Richard Janzen discussed the upcoming June musical.  He is still awaiting approval for the musical of choice, so no musical was announced, but he gave a timeline for audition process and a calendar of related events.  The June musical has become an integral part of the RJC tradition and Richard hopes to make an announcement shortly.
