RJC Record Setting Spectacular

RJC students participated in their annual school fundraising event this past May. Students divided into teams and competed for top honors in the 2nd RJC RECORD SETTING SPECTACULAR. In this competition they were challenged to complete a number of unique tasks in record time!! Team members solicited sponsors for their teams with the money raised being used for student projects and activities at RJC.

No, they're not playing cards, they're building with cards. This challenge was to see how many stories high each team could build a house of cards.

Ever wondered how an elephant knocks over things that stand in their way? Tiera Goertz shows how we do it!

Here is the RJC take on the classic kid's game of marbles. Rachel Klaassen (above) and Taylor Roy (below) take aim and fire away!

The challenge here was for each team to use the least amount of duct tape to secure a teammate to the outside wall of the school. Yes, we said LEAST amount of tape!!

Bounce a ping pong ball off the floor and wall and then catch it in a bucket taped to a hat on your head. Then repeat. Sound easy? Try it!

Epp, Tiera Goertz, Hillary Fast (who provided the speed skating uniforms) and Jennifer Klaassen were the big winners as they raised the most money and had the largest number of sponsors.

Peace Fair

On Monday May 10 the Peace and Justice Studies students hosted their annual Peace Fair. This year's theme was "Where's the Love?". The students explored a variety of issues facing humanity and asked 'where's the love', and tried to respond with practical suggestions about how to make the world a better place to live

Callahan Collier and Bronwyn Warkentin explored the issue of blood diamonds. They suggest that we can make a difference in the world by being less greedy.

Kyle Parton reminded people about the terrible working conditions of many in the developing world.

Torrey Falconer and Erika Hooge sold 'peace buttons' that were created by the class.

Steven Tetreault and Erik Epp shed light on where our chocolate comes from. Where? Mostly the Ivory Coast and mostly from child labor. Where the profits end up? In the first world.

Danika Epp and Taylor Roy and others put their faith in action by emailing GoldCorp, a Canadian mining company about their poor environmental record in Guatemala. GoldCorp's response: they did not reply to the email. Do we care enough to keep pushing them for these abuses against the people of Guatemala?

Judith Schulz captured the mood of what it would be like to be one of the world's IDPs (Internally Displaced Persons).

Lori Pauls demonstrates how to smile for the camera, and what a new breed of artificial trees looks like. These new 'trees' are being 'planted' in an effort to reduce CO2 in the air. Hey, don't real trees do that? Lori reminded us of the need to protect our forests.

Allison Schmidt brought to light the torture that is happening within North America.

Katie Baschak and Kim Koop were 'kidnapping' people throughout the fair and showing them how child soldiers are trained and brainwashed.

Lexi Chalus's booth focused on spreading the love through hugs! Free hugs make the world a happier place to be! Thanks to all of the Peace and Justice students who made this event a success!

Snippets from the last few weeks!

Kyle Parton cuts his hair for Cancer! Kyle has been growing his hair for most of the winter months. It is finally long enough to donate to the Cancer Society. Gail Schellenberg bid for rights to snip off Kyle's locks. All proceeds were contributed to the Pennies for Poverty campaign.

Chorale performed at Osler Mennonite Church. The CMU choir also performed in the joint concert.

The energy is high and the competition fierce in Wellness 10. Joey Fan takes it to Jamieson Fitzgerald who is playing in goal.

Coach Graeme Rinholm returns to RJC to help the team prepare for the upcoming track season.

The Grade 12 class respond to the Grade 11's invitation to Junior-Senior. I think the answer was YES!

The grade 10 and 11 classes were busy decorating the dininghall in a 'Tim Burton' theme.

The student body participated in a 'capture the character' race. All activities took place in the dark.

The evening included a honoring ceremony for the grade 12's. Lexi Chalus receives a keepsake from hosts Hannah Jones and Jennifer Klaassen.

Heidi Epp shares 3rd year memories during the evening. Heidi with 22 other classmates have spent 3 years here at RJC.

Ryan Epp and Dave Feick celebrate the registration of our 50th student for next year. Clay Buhler received a can of coke, bag of corn nuts and the honor of being that student.

'Guys and Pies' Fundraiser

Russ Regier and his "Buncha Guys" provided the program for our most recent 'Guys and Pies" fundraiser. The 'Buncha Guys' group always draws a crowd where ever they sing! There were many familiar faces in this group as all but one of the members are alumni of RJC.

Along with the superb entertainment came a cake auction. Paul Tiessen lead the auction with Duff Warkentin assisting . Current RJC student, Monica Siemens 'modeled' the cakes for the audience to see.

We are grateful to all who so generously bid on all the cakes. Also a big thank you to the people who took the time and expense to prepare the beautiful cakes that were all donated for the evening. Over $14,000 was raised for RJC Auxiliary projects!

Although the evening was called "Guys and Pies" it was necessary for a few women to accompany the men!
