Student Commons Opening-Spring Concert-Mortgage burning

The annual Spring Concert at RJC was a special time of celebration.  In addition to being the final concert for RJC choirs this year, the occasion marked two milestones.  The concert was preceded by a grand opening of the Student Commons.

Principal Gail Schellenberg, Board Chair Geraldine Balzer-Peters, Building Committee member Nicole Tiessen and RJC Co-Presidents Hannah Jones and Clay Buhler participate in the official ribbon cutting and grand opening of the new Student Commons.

A unique feature of the new space is a one of a kind historical graphic wallpaper.  Nicole Tiessen and Kim Tiessen looked over hundreds of photographs and assembled the over 450 pictures into a story of RJC and its students over the decades.

A second milestone was marked with the retirement of the mortgage held on the RJC Student Residence.  Built in 1976, the debt on the building was retired earlier this year.  Current Board Chair Geraldine Balzer-Peters participated, as did Peter Hooge, representing his father who was the on-site Building supervisor during construction, Frank Gerbrandt, representing the board at the time of construction and Ernest Epp, former Principal.

Geraldine Balzer-Peters and Frank Gerbrandt "extinguish the debt" by burning a copy of the residence mortgage.
