Chapel Review Weekending December 21st

Chapel Report Dec. 21, 2012

Although ALSO (Alternative Learning and Service Opportunities) Week is months away, it was the focus of chapel on Mon Dec. 10, 2012.  RJC students not traveling to Alabama or Guatemala signed up for their service opportunity destination of choice (Calgary, Edmonton, or Saskatoon) so preparations can be made.  The ALSO theme: “There are Two Sides to Every Story” was revealed and Luke 16:19-31, the Parable of the Rich Man and Lazarus, was read.  The service component of ALSO week is only one week of classes in the spring, but the ALSO program runs all year with pre- and post-teaching components.

Lloyd Schmidt, Math teacher and Co-VP, shared in chapel on Wed. Dec. 12 and reflected on his recent involvement in a community choir.

On Thursday Dec. 13 the third advent candle, Joy, was lit.  Students read scripture and told Christmas themed jokes to keep people in the joyous spirit!  Kelsey Dueck delivered some real groaners!  Crystal Lau and Alyssa Roy also sang a Christmas medley.  Well done girls!

Ron Schellenberg, Associate Pastor of Mount Royal Mennonite Church, joined us on Fri. Dec. 14 and shared his insights on this year’s chapel theme “I shall not want’ based on Ps. 23.

On Mon. Dec. 17 students watched the movie “The Nativity Story” and continued with the Advent theme on Wed. Dec. 19 lighting the fourth Advent candle, Love.  Area Church Minister, Jerry Buhler, and Area Church Youth Minister, Anna Rehan, also shared an Advent reflection on the chapel theme.  This was also a time to thank Anna for her 28 years with Mennonite Church SK as she is finishes at the end of this calendar year.  All the best Anna, and thank you for all of the connections you had with RJC over the years!

Faith and Life Committee lead the students in a Christmas chapel on Thurs. Dec. 20, lighting each candle in sequence ending with the Christ Candle.  ‘Silent Night’ was sung while students sat in darkness awaiting their turn to light their candle from the Christ candle.  All the best to staff and students this Advent season.  May you experience the mystery of God through the infant Jesus this season!
