Rosthern Junior College Hosts
Environmental Summit
On Thursday Nov. 28,
Rosthern Junior College hosted the Youth Environmental Stewardship and
Sustainability Summit (the YESS! Summit).
Students from RJC, along with student leaders from Constable Robin Cameron
High School and Rosthern High School, participated in a day of workshops,
activities, and summit meetings.
All the events were centered on the environmental themes of
‘stewardship’ and ‘sustainability’.
There were eleven workshops options, of which student choose three to
attend. The workshop themes
included a tour of the Rosthern waterworks, a Valley Action/Sarcan tour,
lessons in natural building, lessons in simple living, art & drumming
workshops, and many others. The
workshops were lead by members of the community and various environmental
groups like the Saskatchewan Council for International Cooperation, 10,000
Villages, and MCC. As part of the
Summit, students met in five different groups and wrestled with some
environmental issues together.
Later, they presented their findings to the large group in the final
session. To end the day students
signed their name to an action step identified on the summit mural. Hopefully this activity inspired
students to take seriously the need for better environmental stewardship in the
future, and showed them how they can work together to meet the challenge.
