Chapel this week
included a visit from Kim Thiessen and Darryl Neustaedter Barg and members of
MCC AB. Kim and Daryl sang songs
from their new CD “Even in the Smallest Places” and shared about their recent
MCC trip to Guatemala and El Salvador where some of the songs on the CD were
recorded. This is Kim’s 5th
CD in a series that have raised over $750,000 for MCC’s work in the area of HIV
treatment and peace development!
It was a blessing to hear her stories and the message of hope. This chapel time also introduced
students to some of the issues facing Latin American people and helped prepare
some students for their upcoming ALSO trip to Guatemala and El Salvador this
spring.

Canadian Mennonite
University (CMU) representative Janelle Hume was another chapel guest. She provided information about CMU and
its programs and related the stressful experiences she had as a grade 12
student trying to figure out ‘what to do with her life’. She encouraged students to not be to
hard on themselves and assured students that they need to put their trust in
God, and make that their primary focus.

Students and staff
observed Remembrance Day in chapel on Thursday November 7 by reflecting on the
staggering death tolls in each of the two world wars, which resulted in the
deaths of tens of millions of people.
In small groups, students were tasked with trying to ‘humanize’ the
numbers. One group determined that
if RJC around 100 people then the death toll from WWII could be described as
the destruction of 500,000 RJCs.
This helped bring the numbers home. Students also compared the descriptive words from the ‘love
passage’ in I Cor. 13:5-8 with the images and actions associated with war. Students shared their reflections. The hymn “If the War Goes On” was sung
and followed by a moment of silence.
Students were reminded that to remember is to work for peace.
